The Town of Buena Vista is located in the Upper Arkansas River Valley in Chaffee County, Colorado. The town population was 2,855 at the 2020 U.S. Census and it's elevation is 7,965 ft (2,428 m). The name "Buena Vista", is Spanish for "Beautiful View", and it can often be heard pronounced locally as "Byoo-na Vista".

The town lies at the base of the 14,000+ peaks of the Collegiate Peaks (named for prominent universities) including Mt. Princeton, Mt. Yale, Mt. Columbia, and Mt. Harvard, all of the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains.

 

Buena Vista has a semi-arid climate with cold, dry winters, with warm, somewhat wetter summers. It's hottest day ever seen was on June 26, 1927, when the thermometer reach 105°F (41°C), and with its coldest day being −37°F (−38°C) on one frigid January morning (day and year not noted in records).The average annual snowfall is 49.4 inches (125 cm), with average annual liquid precipation of 9.93 inches (252 mm).
