Cañon City (elevation 5,351 feet /1,631 meters) is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Fremont County, Colorado. The city population was 17,141 at the 2020 U.S. Census. It sits primarily on the north side of the Arkansas River and the famous Royal Gorge Bridge is nearby. Downtown Canon City is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the largest intact historical districts in Colorado. The town itself is located just eight miles east of the entrance road to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park on Highway 50. This suspension bridge is 1,053 feet (321 meters) above the Arkansas River (the highest such bridge in the world), and has an incline aerial tramway, too, that goes down to the river below the bridge.

Eight miles (13 km) west of town used to be the Western-style theme park called "Buckskin Joe", which was built as a movie set in 1957 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Parts of  21 different movies were made there including Cat Ballou, True Grit, The Cowboys, and Silverado
. It's all gone now, sold and closed down in 2010 and today is a true ghost town.

Cañon City has a semi-arid climate, with the highest temperature ever recorded here being 107°F (42°C), set on July 11, 1954, with the coldest reading ever being -30°F (-34°C), set on January 12, 1963. The town receives an average annual snowfall of 36.5 inches (90.2 cm) and with its high-desert climate means that snow typically melts quickly here after it falls.
