Dallas Divide (elevation 8,983 feet / 2,738 meters) is a high mountain pass in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, located on State Highway 62 about 12 miles (19 km) west of the town of Ridgway. The pass takes its name from nearby Dallas Creek and its namesake is George M. Dallas, 11th Vice President of the United States. The Divide is located in Southwest Colorado between Ridgway and Placerville. The pass is often used to access the town of Telluride and serves as the geological divide between the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre Plateau and sits roughly 10 miles (16.1 cm) north of the prominent points of Dallas Peak and Mt. Sneffels.
Compared to other state passes, the road on Dallas Divide is somewhat easy and free of dangerously steep grades or continuous tight turns. State Highway 62 is a paved, asphalt road with a steady grade of roughly 4%. Dallas Divide features an alpine subarctic climate with long, cold, snowy winters and cool-to-warm summers. Temperatures typically range from winter lows near zero degrees F (-18°C) to summer highs around 77°F (25°C). Snowfall wise, this pass often sees over 300 inches (762 centimeters) fall annually.
