Fairplay is the county seat and the most populous municipality in Park County, Colorado. Fairplay is located in the South Park basin, at an elevation of 9,953 feet (3,034 meters). The town is the fifth-highest incorporated place in the State of Colorado. The population was 724 at the U.S. Census 2020. In the fictional television series "South Park", Fairplay is the visual basis for the Town of South Park in the show, whereas the adults and children portrayed in the show are more so influenced by the people of Boulder, Colorado, which is about a 2 hour drive (or 96 miles / 155km) to the northeast of Fairplay, and which is where the show's creators went to school and met.

Alma is a town located in Park County, Colorado. At an elevation of 10,578 feet (3,224 meters) its is the highest incorporated municipality in the U. S. with permanent residents. The town population was 296 at the 2020 U. S. Census.

The town of Como is an unincorporated community in Park County, Colorado. Como is a tiny former railroad community about one mile off Highway 285, tucked between Jefferson and Fairplay. According to the 2010 census, the population is 439. It's elevation is 9,813 feet (2,991 meters).

The area of these 3 towns features a subalpine climate, characterized by long, very cold, windy winters and short, comfortable summers. Park County, including Fairplay, experienced its most significant single-day snowfall in recent history on March 19, 2003, when 38 inches (96.5 cm) of snow fell within 24 hours, and generally receives around 84 inches (214 cm) of snow per season. According to climate records, the highest temperatures ever recorded in Fairplay was 88°F (31°C), on July 25, 2003; in Alma is 97°F (36°C) on August 3, 1902. For the lowest temp in Alma, is -55°F (-48°C ), which occurred on January 10, 1962.
