Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is one of the highest-elevation parks in the United States, located approximately 55 miles (89 km) northwest of Denver in north-central Colorado, sitting on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The park is situated between the towns of Estes Park to the east and Grand Lake to the west. The eastern and westerns slopes of the Continental Divide run directly through the center of the park with the headwaters of the Colorado River located in the park's northwestern region. The main features of the park include protected mountains, forests and alpine tundra, alpine lakes, meadows, and a wide variety of wildlife within various climates and environments, from wooded forests to mountain tundra. RMNP encompasses 265,461 acres (414.78 sq mi; 1,074.28 km2) of federal land, plus an additional 253,059 acres (395.40 sq mi; 1,024.09 km2) of U.S. Forest Service wilderness adjoining the park boundaries. RMNP's elevations ranges from 7,860 to 14,259 feet (or 2,396 to 4,346 meters), with the highest point being Longs Peak. Sixty mountain peaks here are over 12,000 feet (3,658 meters), with 20 to 24 of those peaks being over 13,000 feet (3962.4 meters). Several small glaciers and permanent snowfields are found in the high mountain valleys of the park.
