The City of Steamboat Springs is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Routt County, Colorado. The town sits at a elevation of 6,867 feet / 2,093 meters. According to 2020 census data, the town had an population of 13,224.

A renowned year-round destination in the Yampa Valley, Steamboat Springs is famous for its "Champagne Powder" skiing at Steamboat Resort, located on Mount Werner, a mountain in the Park Range in the Routt National Fores, and also at the smaller Howelsen Hill Ski Area, along with natural geothermal hot springs like Old Town Hot Springs. Founded in 1900, the town is known informally as "The Boat" – and located in the upper valley of the Yampa River, along U.S. Highway 40, just west of the Continental Divide and Rabbit Ears Pass. It offers a blend of western heritage, outdoor adventure, and relaxing, therapeutic waters.

Steamboat Resort is operated by the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation and was originally named Storm Mountain Ski Area when it opened on January 12, 1963. A major ski area with 6 peaks, it has 297 named trails spread over 2,965 acres (4.6 sq mi; 1,200 ha). Of those, 14% are classified as beginner-level, 42% as intermediate, and 44% as advanced. Its elevations are: Base: 6,900 feet (2,103 m); Summit: 10,568 feet (3,221 m); Vertical Rise: 3,668 feet (1,118 m). The average annual snowfall for the resort is 400 inches (33.3 ft; 10.2 m).

For Howelsen Hill Ski Area, it's a small ski area, with a vertical drop of 440 feet (134 m), with one chairlift, two carpets, and one Poma lift, for a total of 4 lifts. The local youth ski team, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, practices at the area, along with various ski jumpers in training, including U.S. Ski Team Jumpers. Opened in 1914 as Elk Park, it has sent more skiers to international competition than any other area in North America and has the largest, natural ski jumping complex in North America. It's also the oldest continuously operating ski area in North America.

Steamboat Springs has a warm-summer humid continental climate. The hottest temperature recorded in Steamboat Springs was 100°F (37.8°C) on June 29, 1990, while the town features a cold, snowy, and long winter climate. The all-time coldest temperature was a bone-chilling reading of −54°F (−47.8°C) on January 7, 1913. On average, the town sees 184.5 inches (470 cm) of snowfall each snow season.
