Cripple Creek, CO is a former gold mining camp located 44 miles (71 km) southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak. Population was 1,155 at the 2020 U. S. Census. The Cripple Creek Historic District received National Historic Landmark status in 1961 and the city is the county seat of Teller County, Colorado. It's elevation is 9,494 feet (2,894 meters) and today legalized gambling is the city's main attraction, with many casinos located in the downtown area. It's also somewhat famous for its donkey herd, descendants of the burros that once hauled ore from the mines, now free-roaming and a beloved symbol of the town's mining history.

Cripple Creek is a town that had many ups and downs in its history, including two major fires in 1896 that destroyed the town. But the gold rush was ongoing at the time and the downtown was rebuilt. By 1900, Cripple Creek was home to 500 mines. By 1910, it had produced 22.4 million ounces of gold. Between 1894 and 1902, 35,000 people lived in the town of Cripple Creek alone making it the fourth most populous town in Colorado at the time. It was known as a rowdy town, too, with many saloons, casinos and opium dens, with prostitution flourishing until the 1920s. But the population began declining as mines began closing. By 1925, only 40 mines were still in business; by 1945 the number dwindled to just 20 mines. The town became a ghost town from the 1940s through the late 1980s. While never completely deserted, its population dropped from a 1901 peak of well over 10,000 to just 425 residents by 1970. But Cripple Creek was reborn in the early 1990s - following the legalization of gambling in 1990. Today, gambling has brought revenue and vitality back to the town.

Climate wise, Cripple Creek features a cool, temperate climate, with mild summers with highs in the 60s–70s°F (16 to 21°C) and long, snowy and windy winters. The town experiences approximately 100 inches (255 centimeters) of snow annually, with annual precipitation of 18 inches.
