The Town of Lake City (elevation 8,714 feet,/2,656 meters);
) is the county seat and the only incorporated
municipality in Hinsdale County, Colorado. Lake City is mostly known as the
historic, picturesque mountain town located in the San Juan Mountains of
southwestern Colorado and renowned as a destination for hiking, four-wheeling,
and scenic drives like the Alpine Loop.
The town was incorporated on September 19, 1884. In
in the next year, Lake City gained notoriety when Alferd
Packer was charged with murder and cannibalism. Due to the nature of the crime,
it was sensationalized and gained national attention.
At one time, Lake City served as a supply center for the many miners and prospectors
in the early 1870s, with many new residences flooding into the area, and the
town boomed and saw its population grow to as many as 3,000 to 5,000 settlers
at that time. But by 1905, the mining era was over and Lake City saw a decades-long period of economic decline. Population figures
were under 1,000, then dropped to only 400 after 1910. By 1970, only 91 locals
were left. But as tourism started to take hold, more folks started to arrive, as of the 2020 census, there were 432 people living here
today.
Spring Creek Pass, elevation 10,898 feet. (3,322 meters), is a mountain pass
that sits on the Continental Divide in the San Juan Mountains, 17
miles south of Lake
City. A high-altitude access point for scenic driving, camping, and world-class alpine hiking.
Lake City experiences a continental climate, its record high temperature is 98°F (37°C),
on July 28, 1934, while its coldest reading ever was -38°F (-39°C ) on January
27, 1963, and it sees an average
snowfall per season of 78.7 inches
(200.1 centimeters).
